Photographic category
This photograph is a large scale photograph of a sports event set on a landscape. In this case its of a person skiing down snowy terrain .

Purpose
This photograph could be used for a varient of purposes. It could be used within magazines to portray the sport in general for a news story. It could also be used in a commercial sense, to advertise a sports event for example to Winter Olympics.

Image Analysis
This photo is composed so that the skier appears in the foreground and the slope and flags are in the background.  It has been taken so that the ski line in fairly central rather than the actual skier being central however the skier is position on the left line of thirds, this has perhaps been done so that our attention gets drawn and focused into the skier. This central positioning of the ski line makes the audience follow the line down to the skier, this denotes the skier to being the main focus. The lighting in this photo is mainly low key which is mostly caused by shadows however there is high key lighting shining on the ski line where the dust has been sprayed up, this too helps draw attention down to the skier. This lighting creates a huge contrast between the light of the ski line and the shadows. This low key lighting connotes a danger to the sport and makes the sport more dramatic and hazardous however it could being connoting a journey through a dark time to a light time. This photo will have been taken with a fast shutter speed maybe 250th+ of a second so that it takes a frozen picture but also letting less light into the lens this is useful so that there is no motion blur on the photo. The aperture used for this would be and f-stops of 8, this is so less light is let in but also so a maximum amount of detail is kept, this aperture also allows for a deep depth of field. The ISO for this photo would have been 400 so that there is lots of detail in the photo.   This photo is framed using different contrast light levels, this is useful because it allows for attention to be drawn to the ski line and skier. This photo is landscape as it needs a wide frame to fit in the slope and the run, mostly shot with a wide lens. This photo is fitted to the its commercial purpose because it portrays the sport it an artistic way which will draw attention to whatever is being advertising.

Meaning
The meaning of this photo could be to to denote the mastery of nature. However it could connote the transition and journey between light and darkness. Also the ski line denotes that we see that the ski line is shaped like an 'S' which could connote a hidden word of 'Ski'.

Purpose
This photo could be used for a number of purposes. It could be used to advertise this area of Thailand in a magazine or brochure. It could also be used for a kyacking advert or magazine.

Image Analysis
This photo is captured from high vantage point and we see a stream and kayakers, in the background there is the cave entrance and the natural environment. The opening of the cave is positioned in the center of the photograph, this so that it immediately draws your attention to the opening and the outside world. It is composed within the left line of thirds, this draws attention straight to the outside world, this denotes the cave or outside world being the main subject of the photo. The lighting in this photo is mostly low key within the cave however there is high key lighting outside the cave, this create a juxtaposition. The shutter speed used for this would have been of medium speed, possibly 125th of a second. This is so that the shutter lets enough light into the lens so that we can get the full effect from the contrast in light an illuminate the cave but at the same time still capturing the moment. The aperture for this photo would have been quite small for this photo so it could be F11, this is so that the photo appears very pristine and so we can see a long distance without any depth of field change. It looks as though he used a 100-200 ISO for this photo. Drew is using a narrow aperture which we know because the image is very clear and detailed. A medium shutter speed will have been used to create a greater emphasis on the light, this we see through the sun rays and the contrast in light level between the outside and inside of the cave. This photo is framed using the walls of the cave so that the audiences attention is automatically drawn to the outdoors. This photo is landscape so that it can fit in the vastness of the cave.

Meaning
The meaning of this is photo connotes the beauty of the landscape. This denotes for its use as a portrayal of nature in magazines or newspapers.

Purpose
The purpose for this photograph could be used for educating photography books, books or guides on Kenya, mainly for commercial uses as this photo is perfect for showing the Kenyan plains and it might attract tourists.

Image Analysis
In the foreground of this photo we see a tree that is typical of the savannahs of Kenya an in the background we see a flat plains  with a small ant hill sticking up out of the grass. This photo is composed so that the tree is placed on the left line of thirds, this is so that all attention and emphasis is on the tree. The shutter speed for this picture would have been of medium speed probably 125th of a second, this is so that the shutter lets enough light into the lens so that it takes a detailed shot of the savannah. This photo was taken using a medium aperture like F16, this is so that as much light is let into the camera whilst maintaining a detailed and deep depth of field which leaves a crisp, detailed view of the savannah. This photo has a deep depth of field which allows the camera to capture everything in the surroundings in great detail. As the photo shows us that it was a cloudy day so it is likely an ISO of 100 would have been applied so that the photographer can get the most out of the light as he can. This photo is framed by the skyline and the clouds, this I know as the clouds seem to surround the tree making it the center of attention. This photo is landscape, this was done so that we can see the huge open plains.

Meaning
This photo denotes that it is portraying the natural beauty of the savannahs in Kenya, however it connotes a hidden meaning of exile as there is no civilisation around.

Scott Mead studied photography under renowned photographers William Eggleston and Emmet Gowin in the mid 1970’s. In 2009, several years after leaving his investment banking career, during which photography took a back seat, Scott ventured up into the attic and rediscovered a number of boxes containing his old negatives, prints and large format cameras.  He spent a good part of the next year re-immersing himself in photography and has been deeply involved ever since. This journey is described more fully in the introduction to looking back.

Photographic category
This photographic category is that it is fine art photography.

Purpose
The purpose for this photo could be for an real estate brochure or magazine as the photo shows of an apartment building hallway in an attractive way that may bring customers. However it could also be used in a decorating magazine as it shows the style in which this hallway has been furnished and decorated.

Image Analysis
In the foreground of this photo we see a typical apartment building hallway leading to an apartment door which is clearly the subject of the photo. There is no background as the photo is composed very closely to its subject. This photo is composed very geometrically. The door is centered perfectly within the center of both the left and right line of thirds, this is beneficial because it means all attention is lead straight to the subject of the door. The lighting in this photo is hard to judge as it has been edited into grey scale, however I believe it is low key lighted as we can clearly see the light from the windows projecting onto the walls. The shutter speed for this photo would have been 125th of a second this is so that the light levels and reflections can be accurately captured within the picture. The aperture used would have been quite small, maybe F11 so that there is a deep depth of field which means we can see all the detail of the picture.  This photo is framed by the walls of the hallway and the door frame. This framing helps to draw the viewers attention down the hallway to the subject. This photo has been taken in a small aperture so that it captures the alight coming in from the window  but mostly so that the photo is very detailed. This photo is landscape so that the photographer can show the whole hallway and its leading lines.

Meaning
The meaning for this photo could be to connote city life and how drab and simple it is. However the juxtaposition in the photo could conotes an interesting and edgy lifestyle.
